Good songs/hymns

Our daughter Lindy serves as a missionary in an urban mission – ‘Urban Neighbours of Hope’, Melbourne. Here are some of the songs they sing in a service for folks who struggle with emotional/mental health issues…

CHRIST, BE OUR LIGHT

1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness.

Longing for truth, we turn to you.

Make us your own, your holy people,

Light for the world to see.

Chorus:

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.

Shine through the darkness.

Christ, be our light! Shine in your Church

Gathered today.

2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled.

Longing for hope, many despair.

Your word alone has power to save us

Make us your living voice.

Chorus

3. Longing for food, many are hungry.

Longing for water, many still thirst.

Make us your bread, broken for others,

Shared until all are fed.

Chorus

4. Longing for shelter people are homeless.

Longing for warmth, many are cold.

Make us your building, sheltering others,

Walls made of living stone.

Chorus

5. Many the gifts, many the people,

Many the hearts that yearn to belong.

Let us be servants to one another,

Making your kingdom come.

Chorus

– Bernadette Farrell

HERE I AM, LORD

I the Lord of sea and sky,

I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin

My hand will save.

I who made the stars of night,

I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them?

Whom shall I send?

Chorus Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go Lord, if you lead me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

I the Lord of snow and rain,

I have borne my people’s pain.

I have wept for love of them.

They turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone,

Give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my word to them.

Whom shall I send?

Chorus

I the Lord of wind and flame,

I will tend the poor and lame.

I will set a feast for them.

My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide

Till their hearts be satisfied.

I will give my life to them.

Whom shall I send?

Chorus – Dan Schutte, SJ

I SURRENDER ALL

All to Jesus I surrender,

All to him I freely give.

I will ever love and trust him,

In his presence daily live.

Chorus

I surrender all, I surrender all.

All to thee my blessed saviour,

I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Humbly at his feet I bow.

Worldly pleasures all forsaken,

Take me Jesus, take me now.

Chorus

All to Jesus I surrender,

Make me, saviour, wholly thine.

Let me feel the Holy Spirit,

Truly know that thou art mine.

Chorus – Judson W. Van de Venter & Winifred S. Weeden

O FAITHFUL GOD

I will praise you all my life,

I will sing to you with my whole heart,

I will trust in you, my hope and my help,

My maker and my faithful God.

O faithful God, O faithful God,

You lift me up and you uphold my cause.

You give me life, you dry my eyes,

You’re always near, You’re a faithful God.

– South African song

The Servant King

From heaven you came, helpless babe,

Entered our world, your glory veiled.

Not to be served but to serve,

And give your life that we might live.

Chorus

This is our God – the servant king,

He calls us now to follow him,

To bring our lives as a daily offering,

Of worship to the servant king.

There in the garden of tears,

My heavy load he chose to bear,

His heart with sorrow was torn,

‘Yet not my will, but yours,’ He said.

Chorus

Come see his hands and his feet,

The scars that speak of sacrifice,

Hands that flung stars into space,

To cruel nails surrendered.

Chorus

So let us learn how to serve,

And in our lives enthrone him,

Each others needs to prefer,

For it is Christ we’re serving.

Chorus

YOU ARE MY ALL IN ALL

Chorus Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is your name. Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is your name.

You are my strength when I am weak,

You are the treasure that I seek,

You are my all in all.

Seeking you as a precious jewel,

Lord to give up I’d be a fool,

You are my all in all.

Chorus

Taking my sin, my cross, my shame,

Rising again, I bless your name,

You are my all in all.

When I am down you pick me up,

When I am dry you fill my cup,

You are my all in all.

Chorus – Dennis Jernigan

– Graham Kendrick
