When we’re sleeping

Mark asked: What happens to one’s spirit when asleep? What is the relation of spirit to both conscious and unconscious mind?

I responded:

Try this: Spirit is how we relate to God (note I didn’t say ‘the part of us that relates to God’); mind (contra M Scott Peck who identifies mind with spirit) is how we relate to ideas (note I didn’t say the part… you get the idea).

Both are working while we’re asleep – the unconscious mind and the spirit. Dreams, when we listen to them, tell us what/to whom they’re communicating, or how God is communicating to us…

‘Soul’ is who we are as a human entity, and what distinguishes us from other humans…

PS when I ask a pastors’ conference in a traditional culture how they were ‘called’ to ministry, the *vast majority* say it was through a dream (*small minority* in Western cultures).
