Cell phone serial numbers

First this from one netfriend:

I just came across this very useful information which I would like to pass on.

To check your cellular phone’s serial number, key in the following sequence on your cell phone:star hash zero six hash as (*#06#).

A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Should your phone be stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They in turn, will then be able to block your handset, so that even if the thief changes the SIM card, the phone will be totally useless.

You probably won’t get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole or bought the stolen item, can’t use it either.

If everybody does this, there would be no point in stealing mobile phones anymore. Send this to as manypeople with mobiles as possible. At least we can cause more frustration to anyone who wants to steal a mobile phone.

A good place to check urban myths is http://www.snopes.com

This one is true, but read the rider at http://www.snopes.com/crime/prevent/celltheft.asp

All mobile phone networks use IMEI blocking – so that the phone can be blocked once it is reported stolen, which means the phone cannot be used for another SIM card either. If you look at your mobile phone contract, you will likely find the IMEI number there. It is certainly on the side of the box that your phone ships in.

And try this article from the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association

From a netfriend:

This article says you’ll get a 15 digit number when (*#06#) is entered.
Mine has a 12 digit number on the first line, then 2/9 02 on the second. Not 15 digits.

Also, on my phone the number appears just for a few seconds, so I had to enter it many times to write it down.

You might clarify your statement. But thanks for the info.
