A spirit of sound mind: Notes on a scam

2 Timothy 1:7 states “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

This sound mind should be able to exercise sound judgement. In light of this, I seek to provide an example, based on the last week or so of John Mark Ministries, and the way the new site has impacted the world.

Over the last week numerous ads have appeared on Craiglist within the United States, attempting to garner resumes from unsuspecting people in regards to administration and secretarial roles, supposedly from John Mark Ministries.  These ads state the following:

A Small ministry organization is looking for an experienced accounting clerk that will assist controller with accounting function and assist owner with administrative duties.
Successful candidate must possess working knowledge with current experience in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Must be able to interact with all levels of personnel in a professional manner and have exceptional customer service. You must be very computer literate with experience scheduling events, email, scanning, burning CD’s,and general office work, be highly organized and able to handle a fast paced multi-tasking environment..A college degree is preferred. Interested candidates must submit resumes for immediate consideration. Send resume to Email: ([email protected]) —–for more information.

This is a scam, and should be reported to the appropriate authorities if you have had any dealing with the aforementioned email address. The aforementioned also claims the following:

I received your response to the ad on Craigslist  for an Accounting Clerk/Administrative Assistant  i would  like  to let you know this is a new ministry organization which i need someone  competent that we can work  together, Someone to be my Accounting Clerk and Administrative Assistant , I will deeply appreciate all genuine efforts to help me monitor and keep up to  date with all my activities. I have had a previous PA who has been very commendable in her activities and who has been part of my life for the past 6 months, she has since returned to her country. I sincerely hope I will be able to find someone again who will be as efficient as she has been. I’m Darryl, 52, originally from Australia, but I have spent a whole lot here in United States. I’m a lawyer by profession and I have been pretty successful in a handful of ventures I get involved in; from the Angel Investment Network in Canada and United States to various welfare and community

The rest of the email from “Darryl” is not actually anything new, primarily because when you consider the Angel Investment Network, that also comes up across the Internet as a scam. The same pitch is recycled from the Angel Investment Network to unsuspecting people in order to farm resumes and your identity as evidenced here, here, here and here. What you notice is that the scammers recycle everything in order to maintain consistency, be it intentionally defrauding John Mark Ministries, or representing the Angel Investment Network.

Other key features are that they attempt to misrepresent the organisational structure of John Mark Ministries. This is an example from the signature of “Darryl”:

Darryl John Mark
General overseer
John Mark Ministries
Working to help the orphan.
Thinking maturely about christian faith

Notice how close to the truth the scam actually sits.  It is the Spirit’s guidance to question and investigate, by giving us a sound mind and disciplining us against the lies that can protect us. To this end, if there are any roles going at John Mark Ministries, you will find them out on this site and this site only when the need arises. Not on Craigslist.  If you have any advertising or sponsorship enquiries in order to facilitate your business, by all means contact Lawrence at  Absalom Media, our design and brand partner.
