‘Let no one who is not eager for truth and peace enter here’ (Plato)

Articles on this site express varying points of view, to encourage mature thinking on serious issues. The assumption is that you will want to study a controversial topic from various angles before you arrive at a conclusion, rather than simply believe what someone told you when you were impressionable! (So some stuff here is ‘hot’. Proceed at your own risk!). See the Statement of Faith for John Mark Ministries' theological stance.

Universalism

Robert Farrar Capon (born 1925) is an American Episcopal priest and author. A lifelong New Yorker, for almost thirty years Capon was a full-time parish priest in Port Jefferson, New York. In 1965, he published his first book, Bed and Board, and in 1977 he left the full-time ministry to devote more time to his […]

To what shall I compare the kingdom?

To what shall I compare the kingdom? Let’s dream a little… Some time ago a group of people of which I am a part were asked how we would explain the Kingdom of God to a person with no biblical background. We had to be careful to avoid any ‘Christian-ese’! I immediately thought of how […]

The God who dies

‘Died he for me who caused his pain, for me who him to death pursued. Amazing love how can it be, that thou my God shouldst die for me?’ – Charles Wesley, ‘And Can It Be?’, 1738 As we celebrate another Easter, I have been thinking about Jesus’ death on the cross and what it […]

Social Justice

http://jmm.org.au/articles/23367.htm Theology, Social Justice, March 16, 2010 *Sightings* 3/15/10  ¢â‚¬“ Martin E. Marty Are 68.1 million Americans connected with a Communist front movement? Yes, if they are Roman Catholic. Are another 20 million citizens listening to coded Nazi messages? Yes, if they are mainline Protestant. Are tens of millions more in danger of being […]

Eugene H Peterson, Eat This Word

Eugene H Peterson, Eat This Word: A Conversation in the Art of Spiritual Reading Book 2 in the Spiritual Theology series (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 2006) Peterson has a delightful way of elevating the craft of biblical leadership and its foundational skills – focusing our eyes on Jesus, celebrating everyday spirituality, listening to people in […]

Timeline : Fundamentalism Vs Contemporary Theology

Sent by a liberal / anti-fundamentalist friend: There is no ‘the Bible’ that ‘claims’ to be divinely inspired, there is no ‘it’ that has a ‘view of itself’. … There is no such thing as ‘the Bible’s view of itself’ from which a fully authoritative answer to these questions can be obtained. … The most […]

Biblical Literalism and Gay Rights

You may not agree with him, but Martin Marty says interesting things interestingly… *Sightings* 3/1/10 Biblical Literalism — Martin E. Marty Lauren Ashley, self-proclaimed Miss Beverly Hills, now rejected by Hills officials, is drawing more media attention as an oracle than anyone else since another would-be Beauty Queen, Carrie Prejean, spoke. Both commented on homosexuality. […]

The Cross of Christ: a reality check

“To be one, the Church must go back to its common basis. Nothing except Jesus Christ, and him crucified”, the World Council of Churches general secretary the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit said. The cross is not just a sign of religious identity, he added, but a “reality check” for both the churches and the […]

Hermeneutics

BIBLE CLASS: Were people in Jesus’ parables *real*? Yes. *Historical*? Not necessarily. Jonah, Job, Noah…: ditto. Hang on… those three had names/places! Ditto Lazarus, Jericho Road. The key hermeneutical question isn’t ‘Did it happen historically?’ but ‘Is it true?’ (Marcus Borg). Ditto the proton/eschaton: not ‘how?/when?’ but ‘Who/why?’ Think about it… Rowland Croucher

Jesus

Harvested from a friend’s Facebook quotes: “Besides Jesus nothing has any significance. He alone matters.” ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer “The church is measured by Christ: more Christ, more church; less Christ, less church.” ~T. Austin Sparks “…you and I will never be Christians, or servants of the Lord, in real spiritual life and effectiveness beyond the measure […]
