News headlines for October 16th 2002

(Congo–Kinshasa)–We begin today’s newscast in the Democratic Republic of Congo where unrest continues to force Christian workers out of that country. Food For the Hungry’s[1] Beth Allen says they were forced to take action. “We have had to evacuate our expatriate staff. We’ve asked them to move into Rwanda for safety for the time being. Hopefully this will only last for the next couple of days. It is a scary time for the people of the Congo as the other rebel groups that are left in the area after the Rwandans pulled out are all vying for power in that area.” Allen says their work is continuing in central DRC, where it’s relatively stable. She says people still need to pray. “Our biggest prayer right now is that whatever happens in Bukavu does not spread. The key right now is getting the church to reach out to people and as a result Congo could become a sending country. God is refining this country by fire and as a result, Congo is going to bless the world.”

(Ivory Coast)–Elsewhere, rebels in the Ivory Coast dealt a blow to West African peace when they pulled out of talks this week. Despite the threat of continued war, The SEED Company’s[2] Parke Brown says their teams are undaunted. “We do have projects up in the northern part of the country that the rebels are in control of right now. Things are still progressing. We still have people who are doing translation training in the Ivory Coast, and we still have full translation projects currently running in both countries.” Brown says their project is located outside of the main trouble area, but they still are requesting prayer not only for their teams, but also for the talks. “So, we’re optimistic that whatever the result of this fighting, and the possible peace that might come, soon, we hope, that God would continue to bring about His work of Bible translation, despite any of the other obstacles that are going on right now.” The SEED Company is a member of the Wycliffe family of organizations, dedicated to empowering nationals to translate Scripture.

(USA)–As millions of children are orphaned around the world an evangelical ministry is reaching out to their needs. Buckner Orphan Care International[3] is working in 25 countries to help provide food, clothing and other essentials to help sustain them. Buckner’s Tiffany Taylor. “We Interface with the governments and say listen we’ve got all this wonderful expertise on how to deal with children. And, really what that allows us to do is it opens the doors then for us to share all of our expertise, but then we get the door open to share the Gospel to the children also.” While Christians who adopt internationally encourage Taylor, humanitarian and spiritual aid is needed more. “Many of the children aren’t even legally available for adoption. What we’re really focusing is on those kids that are left behind. If we don’t make an eternal difference to them 30-percent of the children when the graduate from the orphanage system will turn to a life of crime. 10-percent will commit suicide within three years.”

(Latin America)– Next, the Evangelical Free Church Mission[4] says they’re excited about what’s coming for the Latin American Church. EFCM recently held its first “Latin America Church Planting Summit”. Thirty of their leaders, both nationals and missionaries, from eight countries met to learn from one another about church planting movements in Latin America. Please pray that they will grow as a team and begin thinking regionally in church planting.

(USA)–And, “Atlanta 2002” is a national student conference sponsored by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship[5] for students of African descent. This year’s theme is “Discerning the Times: Wisdom in an age of Deception.” It is the fourth conference of its type sponsored by InterVarsity. The conference is designed to provide an informative, meaningful, and spirit-led experience for students of African descent to enable them to better reach their generation for Jesus Christ.
