News headlines for December 6th 2002

(Kenya)–Topping the news, President George Bush issued a pledge to join forces with Ethiopia and Kenya in combating terrorism this week at the outset of a summit in Africa. CB International’s[1] Glen Kendall says they are among the many who are reviewing security plans, adding the reality is this may be a way of life now. “The threats are a lot greater, and, not that we didn’t know it before, but the reality [of terrorism] is greater too. As I talked with the folks in Mombasa and other areas of Africa where there are troubles, the world’s not going to get any easier.” Kendall adds that security is as much an issue as the mission that drives them. He asks people to pray. “God doesn’t promise us peace and security and ease, and yet we don’t want to be stupid or foolish and needlessly lay down our lives. So, we’re in a mode of trying to see the balance between safety and security and yet not being terrorized ourselves and continuing to get the Gospel message out.”

(Thailand)–Next, security officials say anti-terrorism crackdowns in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines may force Muslim extremists to seek safer havens and develop logistical bases in Thailand and Myanmar. Due to existing persecution their people have reported, FARMS International’s[2] Steve Salowitz explains they are concerned about the report. “In one of the nations bordering Thailand, the people have actually drawn the attention of the government because of the economic boost that our program has given them…and that isn’t necessarily good in that respect.” Because of the import, Salowitz says they are investigating the reports further. “If that’s happening, then it could have an impact on our rural programs because it seems as though these insurgents tend to gravitate towards rural areas because they have more freedom to do what they want. So, I haven’t heard of anything specifically related to Thailand, but there is a potential that our programs could be impacted in the rural areas.”

(Nepal)–The Supreme Court in Nepal has postponed the appeal of a Nepalese missionary accused of murder. Originally scheduled for late November, there is no new date. Gospel For Asia’s[3] Manja Tamang faces twenty years in prison for a crime that he did not commit. Pray that his appeal will be heard soon and be successful. Pray also for his wife and two young children who are living in a home for families of persecuted GFA missionaries in Nepal.

(Nicaragua)–Meanwhile, a businessman in the United States is building homes for Food for the Poor[4] in Nicaragua. Les Stewart’s daughter Bethany was killed in a tragic explosion in 1998 while maintaining a Blackhawk helicopter. Looking for a way to memorialize her, Stewart wanted to build a house. “The only thing I thought I would do is maybe build a house every year. The house is $2,000 and I knew I could afford a couple thousand dollars to put someone in a home. And, I thought of no better way to carry on her memory than to have someone living in a house.” Stewart didn’t stop there, though. He went on to build a 250 family village, now known as “Bethany Village”. “My company has donated the money to build a church there. We have a feeding program. We’re getting ready to start a school and we’ve already taken care of two teachers and more will be hired as time goes on.” Stewart says the church already has 257 members.

(Ecuador)–And, HCJB World Radio[5] brought physical and spiritual encouragement to residents of a remote Ecuadorian town near the Reventador volcano. The volcano, 60 miles east of Quito, erupted last month, covering the town with ash and causing health problems for residents and livestock. In response, HCJB doctors took a mobile medical clinic into the area. The six-member team traveled to the area to help the affected villagers. By meeting the physical needs, doors were opened to share the hope of Christ.
