Polish priests held in connection with $130 million bank scam

Warsaw (ENI). Three Roman Catholic priests are being held in custody by Polish authorities in connection with a bank scam involving more than US$130 million, but the authorities will not disclose the specific charges the priests are facing nor when they will come to trial. The first Polish priest had been arrested in February 2002 and then two other priests, who have not been named by police, were arrested in December, Poland’s Rzeczpospolita newspaper reported. Resist political pressure, Zimbabwean bishop urges judges

Harare (ENI). Bishop Cephas Mukandi, the head of the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, has implored judges and magistrates in the country to resist political pressure and “courageously shun selective justice”. “We must shun selective justice that treats other children of God as second-class citizens,” Mukandi told guests at the opening of the legal year at Zimbabwe’s High Court in Harare on 13 January. Church leaders in Kenya commend government on free education

Nairobi (ENI). Free education is taken for granted in many countries, but not in Kenya, where church leaders have commended the new government for introducing free, compulsory primary school education, noting that this will rescue millions of children who have been missing school because they can’t afford to pay fees. Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi, the head of the Anglican Church in Kenya, said free schooling would ease the burden on parents, the majority of whom had failed to cope with the high cost of education.
