Baptist leader welcomes Shevardnadze’s vow to curb violence in Georgia

Warsaw (ENI). A prominent Baptist in the Republic of Georgia has welcomed a promise by President Eduard Shevardnadze to curb violence against religious minorities after a spate of attacks on Protestant and Roman Catholic communities. In January, worshippers at a Baptist church in Tbilisi, the nation’s capital, were attacked by followers of a defrocked Orthodox priest before an ecumenical service, which was to have been addressed by a senior Orthodox cleric. Faced with adversity, Myanmar’s churches pull together

Yangon (ENI). Cut off from the outside world for four decades following the imposition of military rule in 1962, churches in Myanmar are finding that adversity is leading them to greater unity. Even when carrying out seemingly normal activities, the Christian minority in this South East Asian nation runs up against many obstacles. The Rev. Konrad Raiser, general secretary of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches (WCC), visited Myanmar in March and said he was “very impressed by the degree of ecumenical cooperation” in Myanmar. “Despite difficulties, they have adopted an imaginative response to the situation.
