(North Korea)–Topping the news, North Korea warns they may pull out of a 1953 armistice accord. The threat of war looms over the Korean peninsula, as the U-S tries to negotiate. Trans World Radio’s[1] Scott Hollinger agrees the atmosphere complicates outreach plans, but won’t stop them. “This is difficult. It’s taking time for us to find the right people that we can utilize to send the radios into North Korea. There are more guards stationed at the border now, the infrastructure of transportation is not good, so, it takes more time.” Hollinger explains the strained relations between the U-S and North Korean governments serve to sharpen their evangelistic mission. “Currently, we produce 11 programs that are being aired to the Korean peninsula, although, the focus of those programs really is North Korea. So, I think if anything, it just has meant that we are more focused on making sure that that ministry gets out.”

(Liberia)–Next, as rebel factions advanced on Liberia’s capital late last week, Baptist World Aid[2] renewed its special appeal for urgent humanitarian and to be sent to Liberia. The deteriorating political situation makes life more precarious for many Liberians. Pray for the Liberia Baptist Seminary. The main campus now houses over 300 displaced persons. Pray for God’s guidance, for strength and endurance during this very difficult time.

(Nepal)–Maoist rebels interrogated a pair of Nepali missionaries following their visit to two mountain villages. The team was looking for ways to help one village recover from a devastating hailstorm, while the other has no meeting place for believers. Despite the threats of Maoists rebels, the men were released on the condition that they ask permission before entering the area again. Christian Aid[3] continues to find ways to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the isolated mountain people.

(International)–Elsewhere, the founder and leader of the world’s largest Christian ministry passed away Saturday from pulmonary fibrosis complications. Mission Network News’ Ruth Bliss has more in this report. “81-year old Bill Bright died as he lived his life; dedicated to the work of sharing the Gospel. “And I pray that this movement, will continue to be, as long as I am involved, and even more dramatically, under the leadership of Steve Douglass, a mighty, supernatural movement of God’s spirit, a movement of love.” Bright founded Campus Crusade for Christ and led the ministry for more than five decades, serving people in 191 countries. Bright was also instrumental in the tract development of the “Four Spiritual Laws” and commissioned The JESUS film documentary. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th at 10:30 at the First Baptist Church in Orlando, Florida. For Mission Network News, I’m Ruth Bliss.”

(Philippines)–And finally, part two of our series on Martin and Gracia Burnham, missionaries with New Tribes Mission[5] . A couple held captive By Muslim extremists in the Philippines. Gracia talks about fierce firefights in the jungle…in her own words. “You never knew when the gun fire was going to start. We dropped. And, then we would wait for the signal to run and then we would drop again and run again and drop again. Often we could see the people firing at us, but there were times we could see. We would hear the bullets whiz past our heads and they would smack into trees.” Gracia tells us what sustained them.” We would very quietly sing hymns together, quote scripture verses, we prayed a lot together…prayed for the kids a lot, prayed for our release a lot. We told each other stories. We would prepare our favorite meal mentally.” Tomorrow we’ll hear about servanthood in captivity. [6]
