News headlines for August 27th 2003 (India)–We begin today in India, where authorities stepped up security in most major cities. This follows deadly bombings Monday in Bombay. Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Mission India’s[1] John DeVries says the extremist Hindu-Muslim tensions are building. He adds believers are wary because: “Christians are the object of hatred of both of these groups. In a very real way, Christians in India have two terrorist-types coming after them rather than just the one in some of the other countries of the world. But, these two groups, the Muslims and the Hindus are also after each other.” DeVries credits the hostilities and the anti-conversion movement as the catalyst behind church growth. “The persecution just really is like pouring gas on a fire. Where it comes, it makes people seriously commit to Christ, in spite of anything, and it just starts to go wild.”

(USA)–Meanwhile, the world of Spanish language Christian books expands. Latin America Mission’s[5] Ken MacHarg. “Publishers of Spanish-language Christian books say that their sales are taking off with the growing Hispanic market in the United States. Strong growth has been noted from Miami to North Carolina and Texas to California. The Miami based publisher Editorial Unilit has teamed up with several distributors to get bookstore owners to begin to note the Spanish-speaking people in their community. Larry Downs, Jr., the newly appointed President of Unilit says they are providing Bibles, music and books and a merchandising kit including letters to pastors and other promotional material. Downs said that many mid-America cities may not yet be able to support a Spanish-language bookstore, but within five years many of them could. For Mission Network News, I’m Ken MacHarg in Miami.”

(Madagascar)–And, Teen Missions[6] reports encouraging news from their Madagascar Boot Camp. This is the first time they’ve had so many team members. More than 120 kids responded to the Gospel. Please pray for the security in the area, as there is evidence of spiritual opposition. Pray for wisdom and understanding for the leaders teaching the Boot Camp. Thank God for all the blessings that He has given this year. Pray that the young people will be able to maintain their new faith at home.
