A major food shortage in southern Africa is giving Christians a platform to share Christ. Southern Africa (MNN) — We begin today in Southern Africa as millions of people are going hungry because of the lack of food and water. Trans World Radio’s[1] Brent Bartlett describes the situation. “We’re finding a situation where food is beginning to run out in many parts of the region. Zimbabwe probably being the worst at the moment, followed by Swaziland and Botswana and the Northern Cape region in South Africa. And, unless rain comes pretty soon Africa’s going to find itself in a very difficult situation.” Bartlett says TWR is vital because they’re sharing important information on the air. “We’re able to tell people exactly what is happening. And, not only ask people to pray for a change, but also to provide opportunity for information to get around so that people who have can share with people who don’t have.” Which can be the key to sharing Christ with a person in need. Bolivia’s troubles have mission teams on alert. Bolivia (MNN)–Meanwhile, Bolivia still teeters on the edge of bedlam, despite the president’s exit and a hastily assembled cabinet this weekend. The quick change of power may have bought time, but Grace Ministries International’s[2] Sam Vinton says they’re watching the situation. “The concern is that the vice president, who has now become the president, that, if he doesn’t deliver in so many weeks or months, whatever limit they set, that these people will do the same thing again. So, the country, it seems to me, is left in a very tenuous situation, to where we need to pray that the Lord will, in some way, will work through these new leaders.” Vinton says while their teams were fairly well-removed from the conflicts, the trouble has spread before. He adds that the indigenous church moves ahead, in spite of substantial obstacles. “They’re seeing the Bolivian believers move on and start some new churches, and put up some buildings, which, of course, is what we’re aiming for in any of our ministries and so I think that that, to me, is always an encouraging thing to see.” Full Story: http://mnn.gospelcom.net/article/5262

Famine rife in Southern Africa; believers respond. Zambia (MNN)–In continued response to the famine that is now affecting millions of lives in southeastern Africa, Operation Blessing[3] and a partnering organization is sending a container of hunger relief to two orphanages in Zambia. It will begin traveling across the Atlantic Ocean on November 7th. Two containers to Zambia and one container to Malawi each filled with 128,000 meals arrived to their destinations in October. Planning ahead for a Christmas ministry in Haiti. Haiti (MNN)–Next, For Haiti With Love[4] is gearing up for its year-end events. They are scheduling cargo shipments from now through December for their Christmas party in Haiti. That includes gifts, party supplies, and food. Space is at a premium in shipping, as the volume of things shipped by other missionaries and by the Haitians living in America increases. The annual party is just one aspect of outreach in this country. Through their gifts and other programs, the Haitians feel the tangible love of Christ opening doors for evangelistic ministry. Short term workers are needed to help Bible translation around the world. USA (MNN) — And finally, volunteers are needed to help in world-wide Bible translation and you don’t need any experience….at least not in translation. Wycliffe Associates[5] President Bruce Smith says his organization is an avenue for ordinary Christians to use their skills to assist Bible translation. “Anything you can think of probably has a place that can be engaged and employed in Bible translation so that the linguists can stay focused on their job. This past year we had close to 850 involved and we could really use double that number. We’re in a very expansive mode right now. We’re in the process of trying to accelerate Bible translation six fold.” Smith says safety is a common concern. Smith tells us how he addresses that. “Right now we’ve got about 4,000 families with Wycliffe Bible Translators that are serving around the world. So, when volunteers ask me is it safe to go, my (comment) is, if it’s safe for the Bible translators, it’s safe for us.” Builders, accountants, and computer programmers are all needed to help.
