Turkey’s bombings prompt caution by mission teams. Turkey (MNN)–We begin today in Turkey where deadly bombings hit Istanbul Thursday. It’s the second time in a week where Islamic militants targeted the West. Political and sectarian violence aside, IN-Network’s[1] team in Turkey may be keeping a low profile right now because of their ministry’s reputation. U-S Director Rody Rodeheaver explains. “That is always a struggle in these types of countries–Christianity being tied to America and the West. So, our staff have to work hard at overcoming that and these kinds of events trigger some of those kinds of feelings.” Rodeheaver says there is good news to report from their ministry, not only in response, but also: “We’ve been seeing, in Turkey, a lessening of the regulations, and a lessening of the pressures there, with more freedom being given for the Gospel to have opportunities to reach out.” Full Story: http://mnn.gospelcom.net/article/5379 [2]

Christian released from a Peruvian prison after eight years. Peru (MNN) — Next, it’s taken nearly eight years, but an innocent Christian is now free in Peru. Colonel David de Vinatea (dah VEEN-ah-TEE-ah) was released from prison after having his sentence commuted. De Vinatea was arrested November 9, 1995 on trumped up drug charges. Open Doors’ Latin America Director, Richard Luna explains. “From the president to his first chief of staff, they were, since the early 90’s highly involved in trafficking of drugs. So, when he chose to say no to corruption the very corrupt people knew he was a danger so they put him in prison. Not for believing in Christ, but for obeying his faith.” Luna says de Vinatea’s testimony spoke loudly. “David was faithfully able to be a witness to his faith. The Lord gave him fruit and as a result there are believers in the prison because not only did he suffer, but he kept the faith, he shared his faith and I think that’s something we need to do as well.” Full Story: http://mnn.gospelcom.net/article/5380 [4]

Terrorist injures a retired HCJB World Radio missionary and his daughter. Israel (MNN)–A gunman wounded five people, killing one, before being shot dead at the Israel-Jordan border Wednesday. Among the wounded was a retired HCJB World Radio[5] missionary and his daughter. They were part of an Ecuadorian tourist group visiting Jordan, Israel and Egypt. The missionary, Gustavo Molina, served as a chaplain at HCJB ‘s Hospital in Quito for more than 40 years. His goal was to lead at least one patient Christ every day, and thousands responded to the Lord throughout his career. Full Story: http://mnn.gospelcom.net/article/5377

Bombs aren’t stopping Christians from reach out in Iraq. Iraq (MNN) — Meanwhile, God continues to use evangelical relief agencies to bring hope to Iraq, a country hurting in the midst of continued uncertainty. 500 pound bombs were dropped by the United States hitting suspected ambush sites and hideouts earlier this week. Food for the Hungry’s Tamara Dutch says the recent combat activity isn’t stopping what they’re doing. “Food for the Hungry is known for going to the hard places. And, as long as we are assure that our staff or our partners will be safe we will continue to go to these places.” Dutch says working with the local church gives believers credibility, opening doors to share their faith. Dutch says they’ve help a number of people. “We have distributed to families in both Baghdad and Mosul. (In) Baghdad Food for the Hungry and its partners have helped a little over 1,000 families (and) 1,000 families also in Mosul. Full Story: http://mnn.gospelcom.net/article/5381

Prayer partners are needed in preparation for Beachfest Argentina. Argentina (MNN) — And finally, Argentines will be flocking to the beach in January and many will hear the Gospel message thanks to the Luis Palau Evangelistic Association[7] . The LPEA is already getting ready for Beachfest Argentina, scheduled for January 19th through the 24th in the city of Mar del Plata. Beachfest Argentina is expected to draw thousands because Jose Luis Rodriguez, a famous singer and actor and committed Christian, has agreed to be part of it.
