Who is welcome at communion?

From a netfriend:

The issue is primarily about the exercise of power. The table spread before us tells us about the power of God and the way it is exercised, and it is in stark contrast to the exercise of power in front of it.

The time, place and method for challenging sinful practices is one which requires much prayer, and sensitivity to the particular circumstances. A blanket approach reflects the stereotype of the Pharisee rather than Jesus of the gospels. It is always a sobering thought for me that Jesus’ sternest words were reserved for the religious people, and his most gracious for those condemned under the law. How we translate that into word and deed today is our major challenge, requiring divine wisdom, and involving tremendous risks.

But such is the nature of our calling….
