A ministry prepares for looming crisis in Haiti uprising. Haiti (MNN)–We begin today in Haiti where rumors of a coup d’etat are spreading along with unrest throughout the country. The riots this week are the strongest challenge yet to embattled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Another concern is the potential for a humanitarian crisis, according to For Haiti With Love’s[1] Eva DeHart. “Food can’t move from the port city north, there’s no electricity. It takes electricity to pump water, so they’re going to get into a situation where they have bad water. It could get really bad for the poor population very fast.” DeHart says they just completed a major food shipment and replenished their health clinic’s supplies. While the violence hasn’t yet spread to Cap Haitien, their teams stand ready to minister. “If things do get rough and people do start getting hurt, then we’ll just start sharing God’s love in the form of treatment for them without asking any questions.” Pray for peace and for the safety of their teams as they work in this crisis. Unrest in Haiti disrupts Bible translation. Haiti (MNN)–Meanwhile, anti-government rebels had taken control of at least nine towns in eastern Haiti by Monday, and the death toll in the violent uprising is rising. The carnage is disruptive to the work of the Bible League[2] teams in Haiti. They are reporting numerous incidents where bandits with weapons come into the office to demand money. IK people to hear God’s word for first time Uganda (MNN) — The Ik people of Uganda will be hearing Gospel messages and Scripture portions through a special tape player for the first time. Tom Dudenhofer of Audio Scripture Ministries of Holland, Michigan[3] . “Audio Scripture Ministries is helping in a project that includes translators here in the United States, an Ik believer in Kampala, a Christian recording studio in Kampala, and ASM is providing funding and hand powered tape talk players. The translators and materials have been recorded and duplicated.” What’s needed now is prayer for distribution because Dudenhofer says the tribe is surrounded by rebels. “They alternately allow people to come through the area and then other times they will attack or rob or cause damage. We are in the midst of discussions about what would be the best way to get this distribution to the Ik people.” Six-thousand dollars is needed to complete the distribution effort. Sparked by passion, the JESUS Film Project moves to meet curiousity. USA (MNN)–Elsewhere, the JESUS Film’s[4] Clyde Taber helped create a DVD tool in advance of the movie telling of the 12 hours leading to Jesus’ crucifixion. While the film doesn’t open until February 25th, the first day of Lent, Taber says God’s timing is perfect. “It just so happened that the release of this product is timed with the release of Mel Gibson’s film, “The Passion of the Christ”, so we think it’s a very unique opportunity to provide a tool for those people who will view that film.” Taber hopes the movie will spark a tremendous curiosity about Christ in millions of Americans. “The “JESUS: Fact or Fiction?” is an interactive DVD that responds to questions about God, Jesus and the Bible. It consists of scientists, theologians, historians and philosophers responding to these different questions.” The JESUS Film marks its 25th anniversary this year with 831 languages in the film’s translation. Open Doors seminars helping persecuted pastors in India India (ODM/MNN)–India’s Hindu majority far outweighs the 25 million Christians in the country. However, the number of believers is steadily growing each year. Open Doors[5] is helping Christian leaders by conducting “Standing Strong Through the Storm” seminars in India. The four-day seminars are designed to prepare church leaders for persecution and encourage them. In addition to the 10 seminars this year, Open Doors is committed to mobilizing prayer networks in India in 2004 and providing additional support for our persecuted brothers and sisters.
