Pro 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
Who does this refer to?
My response:
Ah… depends who you ask.
Just for fun I checked with a couple of liberal commentaries and an evangelical one.
In summary: both sets of authors agree these are ancient proverbs highlighting human ignorance about the Divine.
The Zondervan NIV commentary (as evangelical as you’ll get) says: ‘To know a person’s “name” is to exhibit power over and closeness to that person. The parallel reference to “son” has been identified as Israel, as a simple poetic parallelism for “his name” and (by Christian interpreters) as a reference to the Son of God.’
(The British have an expression ‘to have a bob both ways’ 🙂
P.S. Do you use the KJV because your pastor does? Does your pastor advocate the KJV as the best translation for exegetical and communication purposes?
