Haiti faces final battle; believers mobilize to meet crisis head-on. Haiti (MNN)–Haiti’s national crisis opens today’s newscast. Rebels are closing in on the last stronghold of President John Bertrande Aristide, vowing to remove him from power. The uprising has forced road closures, creating a humanitarian problem. Food For the Poor’s[1] Angel Aloma explains that’s why it’s critical for their staff to continue distribution. As to risk of rebel attacks, he says, “If hunger was a crisis before, now it has doubled in its urgency. Even in the rebel cities, they’re in need of food so they have realized that there are certain things they should not disrupt. I think one of those things is the influx of food into the island.” Aloma says their national staff remains determined to keep food distribution running, with an eye cast toward partnering with the church. “By being able to fulfill the material needs of their people, we are empowering them to be able to better give the word of God to those people also, because it is difficult to listen to the word of God with an empty stomach.” Full Story: http://mnn.gospelcom.net/article/5720

OMS evacuates missionaries from Haiti Haiti (MNN) — Next, the violence on Haiti has forced OMS International to evacuated 10 of their missionaries from country. The organization has also put on hold short-term missionary projects. OMS is the parent organization of Men For Missions[2] , an organization that’s saturating the country with Christian radio. Their radio ministry continues broadcasting hope of the Gospel, but that could change. Rebels have blocked roads, interrupting fuel supplies. Black History month in the U-S provides ministry opportunities USA (MNN) — February is Black History month in the United States. American Missionary Fellowship’s[3] Ed Henderson is praying that by honoring African-American spiritual leaders from the past and present, they’ll be able to recruit new workers for American’s mission field. “If we can recruit and commission (and) dispatch minority missionaries into those fields it makes it a lot easier. So, we’re looking for young Afro-American males that have gone to Bible College that are interested in ministering here in America.” Henderson believes these recruits will make their urban “learning community” programs even more effective. “They’re very receptive when someone of their own nationality, or ethnic origin, comes to them with the story, convincingly about what Christ can do for them in their lives.” These Bible study programs are established, in order that those who participate will come to Christ as they learn God’s word. Partnerships are helping speed up Bible translation Meanwhile, a new partnership is expected to help speed up Bible translation for those who don’t have God’s word in their own language. Campus Crusade for Christ International, Wycliffe International, International Mission Board and Youth with a Mission have formed what they’re calling the “Epic Partnership.” President of Wycliffe Bible Translators USA[4] Bob Creson. “Of the 2,737 languages that are left, we recognized a large portion of these people are currently illiterate. They come from oral societies. And, it’s a great way of introducing the scriptures into a society and give them a chance to hear the Good News of the Gospel and then transition them into a literacy program.” Forming a partnership is just one step in the process. Creson says there are major obstacles ahead. “Many of these remaining Bible translation needs are in areas of the world that are (in countries that are) very, very challenging (in terms of) access,” says Creson. ESL programs are being developed for spiritual outreach USA (MNN)–And, Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan is hosting their third ESL Ministry Conference Saturday, March 20th. The conference entitled “Across the Street and Around the World” is designed to introduce churches to programs that teach English as a Second Language. It is an effective way for churches to reach local people for Christ while meeting the practical need of teaching English. ESL is used in many countries by missionaries to spread the Gospel.
