Haiti rebels say attack imminent; a mission group pulls back. Haiti (MNN)–Topping the news, as rebels threaten a push into the capitol city, the Christian Reformed Church[1] pulls its missionaries from Haiti. Michael Bruinooge (brew-negee) with the Christian Reformed Church. ” We’ve been monitoring the situation as an event response team for the Christian Reformed Church ministries in Haiti, and determined on Monday night that staff should all be evacuated.” The CRC has been at work in Haiti since 1975. Bruinooge says the dozen or so missionaries at work now were involved in a number of activities.” Some in strengthening and training church leaders, pastors. Others in working with community improvement organizations, including small businesses, others were teachers at a Christian school.” Bruinooge says their prayers are with the Haitian nationals during this turmoil and they hope to return when control of the situation is regained. Islamic militants in Nigeria kill Christians in raid. Nigeria (MNN) — Meanwhile, 49 Christians were killed by Islamic militants in a raid in the Christian town of Yelwa, Nigeria. According to the Barnabas Fund, Christians were shot as they ran to a church trying to hide. The attackers are believed to be Fulani Muslims, prossibly from Chad, Niger or other African countries. Hausa and Fulani Muslims have repeatedly been involved in similar attacks in Nigeria, hoping to Islamize the entire country. Pray for safety for believers and that evangelism with continue. A cross cultural worker comes full circle after 30 years. USA (MNN)–They were working in Central Asia during a Communist party military coup, and the birth of a new republic. Not long after the turmoil, Interserve[2] medical partner Elliot Larson and his wife were kicked out of the country. They returned to the States to practice medicine, but nearly 40 years later, Larson felt the call to return. “Our children are finishing their education. I’m old enough to retire, and the situation in has changed so that there is, I think, rather more opening for the possibility of going to work there.” Larson wants to begin a medical intern program, with an eye cast to ministry. “We want to show real honesty in the way we deal with patients and our colleagues, and, under the circumstances of a Muslim country where there are limitations in evangelism, we can’t do that. Two Christian groups partner to reach out to Russian orphans. Russia (MNN)–Next, it’s not every day a Russian orphanage receives a new children’s gym. But, that’s a reality for the Kotlas Baby Home in Russia’s Arkhangelsk region. “Friends of Russian Orphans,” or “FORO,” financed the new gym—FORO co-founder Lisa Wurster says it’s part of their mission. “The purpose of ‘Friends Of Russian Orphans’ is to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to Russian orphans and their caregivers through practical assistance and friendship programs. Really, what we’re trying to do is provide both material and spiritual assistance to the thousands of children that remain in the orphanages that aren’t going to be adopted.” Wurster says FORO partners with Adoption Associates[3] in the region. “We thought it would just be a natural fit that the people that are working with AAI through the adoption process might ultimately be interested in providing some sort of ongoing assistance to the children that remain in the orphanages. Bibles heading to Wales to help kindle revival Wales (MNN) — And finally, those who received the Gospel in India will be traveling to Wales, the country responsible for bringing God’s word to them. Rochunga Pudaite of Bibles for the World[4] is from the Hmar Tribe in northern India. Pudaite says the purpose of his trip is two fold — to thank Wales for the gift of the Gospel by providing them with 100-thousand Living New Testaments. He’s praying this will ignite revival there.
