From a netfriend:
i had the chance to sit with a great guitarist who played with many big bands in the 1980’s. he was not a christian at the time either. we sat in his living room as he played song after song to my amazement.
then he handed the guitar to me.
i looked at him and said, “i am really not that good, i don’t have anything to show you.”
he said something i have never forgotten: “play with everyone and everyone has something to teach you.”
i played one of my songs and was quite humbled to see this guy pick up
another guitar and play along — pausing and asking me to go over a part again — asking, “now how did you do that?”
trust me, i am not that good. but, i was honored that he noticed the precussive style i had worked on for years. he even pointed it out describing it exactly as i had intended the style to be understood. i
was doubly honored to see him take all of my years of effort and pick it up in one sitting and make it sound even better than i had ever been able to accomplish.
he could have treated me like a second class citizen or i could have thought him a musical snob. instead, he taught me something more important that guitar playing.
