Yes. If you and I mean that our theological journey is a function of imbibing what we are told by admired-others, rather than forged in the real experiences of pain and joy and illness and grief, etc. When I worked full-time with tertiary students (with IVF, now it’s AFES) I used to ask Christian students three broad questions:
1. What are the belief-essentials you hold?
2. Who was your main theological teacher/pastor/mentor?
3. On which of these essentials do you disagree with him/her?
Guess what? About 100% believe what someone told ’em when they were impressionable…
