Shabbat Seder

CHARITY (Tzedakah)

SEDER LEADER

Shabbat is the time we take to remember the blessings of creation and redemption, the blessings of life and abundant life. Before we partake of Shabbat, let us remember those less fortunate than ourselves and do what we can to help.

[A donation is made to the collection box. (pushke)]

CANDLELIGHTING (Hadlakat Neirot)

WOMAN OF THE HOUSE:

As I light the lights of Shabbat, let us recite the ancient blessing:

[Two candles are set out: one representing creation, the other redemption. The blessing is said with outstretching hands over the candles.]

ALL:

Blessed are thou, O Lord our God,

Baruch attah Ahdonnay

King of the Universe, Eloheinu Melech Haolam

who has made us holy through his word, asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav

instructing us to kindle the lights of Shabbat. v’tzivanu lehhaddleck ner shel habat.

THE FAMILY BLESSING (Birkat Hamishpacha)

SEDER LEADER:

Shabbat is a time to remember our blessings. May it inspire us to share those blessings with others.

[Each person blesses his beloved with the Aaronic blessing.]

ALL:

The Lord bless you and keep you; Yevarechecha Adonai v’yishm’rkha

The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; Yaeir Adonai panav eilecha vichuneka

The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Yisa Adonai panav eilecha veyaseim lecha shalom.(Numbers 6:22-24)

[Each person adds: “Thank you Lord for my precious ______________, who is truly a blessing to me.”]

SANCTIFYING SHABBAT (Kiddush)

SEDER LEADER:

To make holy Shabbat, we recount its twofold nature and raise a glass of wine in honour of the Lord our God.

ALL:

God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good…the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day, God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God

blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it, because on it, God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. (Genesis 1:31-2:2)

Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy…For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. (Exodus 20:8-11)

Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy…Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm… (Deuteronomy 5:12-15)

We take this time to remember the blessings of life, the blessings of eternal life.

SEDER LEADER:

To make holy the Shabbat, we bless a glass of wine.

[The blessing is said with outstretching hands over the glass of wine.]

ALL:

Blessed are thou, O Lord our God, Baruch attah Ahdonnay

Creator of the fruit of the vine. Bohray pree hagawfen.

SEDER LEADER:

And raise it in honour of the Lord our God for the great things he has done.

[The blessing is said with the glass of wine raised.]

[The blessing is said with outstretching hands over the bread.]

ALL:

Blessed are thou, O Lord our God, Baruch attah Ahdonnay

King of the Universe, Eloheinu Melech Haolam

who brings forth bread from the earth. ha motzi lehem min haaretz.

SHABBAT MEAL

THE BLESSINGS AFTER THE MEAL (Birkat Hamazon)

SEDER LEADER:

As the Scriptures say,

“You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you. Take are that you do not forget the Lord your God…. When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from the flint rock, and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end, to do you good. Do not say to yourself, “My power and the might of my own hand have got me this wealth.” But remember the Lord your God…. (Deuteronomy 9:10-17)

Psalm 126

When God restores the exiles of Zion, we shall be with those who dream.

Our mouths will be full of laughter then, our togues with song.

Then will they say among the nations: “God has dne great things for them.”

God has done great things for us, and so we now rejoice.

Then those who sow in tears will reap in joy.

Those who go forth weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, will return bearing the sheaves with song and with laughter.
