What function do you see God as having?

Well, for a start (but only a start) he set up the rules/laws (however you like to talk/write about it) by which the universe runs. Or, as some Christians prefer to say, he decided what his normal way of doing things would be and sticks to it – so that scientific experiments can be replicated.

He isn’t one of those capricious gods found in other religions, who has to be appeased by appropriate rituals before sending rain on the just and unjust alike – that’s somewhere in the Bible but the precise reference escapes me at the moment.
