Today’s News Stories:
KIDNAPPING AND MURDER HEIGHTEN TENSIONS IN NEPALESE CHURCH. Maoist rebels in Nepal have now claimed responsibility for last week’s murder of radio journalist Dekendra Raj Thapa and kidnapping of missionary Besh. The rebels distributed leaflets in Thapa’s hometown in the mountainous western Dailekh district announcing he had been convicted and executed for “spying.” The news rocked staff at the headquarters of Gospel For Asia. KP Yohannan says Thapa was a missionary for them from 1998 to 2000, when he felt a calling to journalism. No word has been heard on missionary Besh or his whereabouts. Authorities have ordered two other missionaries, Pastor Basu and native missionary Imansingh, to vacate their area of ministry within a week. Thapa is survived by a wife, two daughters and one son. ISLAMIC GROUP CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY FOR ATTACK ON PARIS JEWISH CENTER A previously unknown Islamic militant group, Jamaat Ansar Al-Jihad al-Islamiya, said Monday, it set fire to a Paris-based, Jewish-run soup kitchen. Sunday’s arson attack, in which nobody was killed or injured, was condemned by French President Jacques Chirac amid fears of a new wave of anti Semitic violence in France. Officials said the center, situated in central Paris, was gutted by the fire. Police found swastikas daubed in red ink on two refrigerators inside and poorly spelled anti-Semitic slogans. France is home to Europe’s largest Jewish and Muslim communities. In a statement, President Chirac stressed the “absolute determination of the state to find the perpetrators of these unacceptable acts.” However, The Jerusalem Post news paper suggested August 23, that the French authorities are fighting an uphill battle. It cited fresh figures from the interior ministry, which shows that the number of racist and anti-Semitic attacks soared in the first half of 2004. (BosNewsLife)

BAPTISTS RESPOND TO SUDANESE REFUGEE CAMP CRISIS Sudan’s government has accused rebels in Darfur of violating a cease-fire signed in April which has resulted in the killing of nearly 1500 civilians and slowed the delivery of aid to the region. With $5000 in emergency funds, Southern Baptist International Mission teams purchased food and grain for Sudanese refugee camps. An additional $100,000 will get clean drinking water into the camps, and long-term plans call for helping repair and dig wells in the area. Workers in the region say because the conflict there is Muslim against Muslim, many are beginning to question their Islamic faith. (Mission Network News)
CHRISTIANS PROVIDE 16,000 SCHOOLBAG KITS TO ISRAELI FIRST GRADERS Back to school in Israel is just days away and many families will be under stress as they consider the cost. More than 16,000 Jewish, Arab and Druze children starting first grade next month live below the poverty line. The Knesset Christian Allies Caucus recently challenged its participating Christian members to join with them in providing a new, fully outfitted backpack for each needy first-grader. Christians around the world have responded to make this project a success. The recipient children have been selected with the assistance of community and social workers throughout Israel. INTERNATIONAL BIBLE SOCIETY RUSHES SCRIPTURES TO FLORIDA International Bible Society (IBS) is distributing thousands of Scriptures to people in Southern Florida impacted by Hurricane Charley. The ministry began distribution on August 17, along with The Salvation Army, U.S. Military Chaplains, Redeemer Lutheran Church and other local churches. Through the cooperative effort, IBS seeks to bring a message of hope and comfort to the victims of this hurricane by distributing up to 40,000 Scripture resources. “Drawing on its Crisis and Disaster Outreach Fund, IBS is providing a variety of Scriptures to help meet the spiritual needs of those impacted by Hurricane Charley,” said Peter Bradley, President of IBS. “We know only God’ s Word can comfort those who have been through this crisis, so we are giving out these Scriptures as quickly as possible.” The Scripture materials being provided were developed to emphasize the comfort and hope found in God’s Word to disaster victims. According to estimates from the federal government, Hurricane Charley ranks as the third-worst disaster to hit North America. (Religious Media Agency)
FLIGHT ATTENDANT IMPACTS HUNDREDS FOR CHRIST WORLDWIDE Denver-based flight attendant Connie Strasheim has always had a heart for the less fortunate, and that vision has had an impact on hundreds of needy people worldwide. In the last few years she has participated in humanitarian missions to Bolivia, Ecuador and El Salvador through an organization called Airline Ambassadors. After giving her life to Christ more than two years ago, her care and concern for the needy expanded and she wanted to help with spiritual as well as physical needs. In an e-mail interview Strasheim said, “In the last year I organized two missions to Ecuador and Guatemala. Along with sharing Christ, we distributed thousands of dollars worth of donations to orphanages in Ecuador and a village in Guatemala.” Strasheim’s friend, Michael Troy, added, “The uniqueness about her ministry is the importance of building relationships with the people.” Strasheim’s trips to more than 35 countries have helped her develop a deep love and ever-increasing passion to meet human need. “The Lord has placed it on my heart to help those who have fewer resources than I have,” she said. “I believe God has blessed us with wealth so that we might give it away.” (Assist News Service) * * * * * * * * * * * * * James A.
