Today’s News Stories:

MOODY’S PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION TO FOCUS ON PREACHING Moody Bible Institute President Dr. Joseph M. Stowell announced today his resignation effective February 2005. He told students, faculty and staff gathered at Moody’s campus that his decision was guided by a growing sense of calling that the next season of his life should be focused more strategically on using his gifts to encourage the church and advance the cause of Christ through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. “God has laid on my heart a calling that I cannot deny,” Stowell said. “Over the last few years I have had a growing and now unshakable conviction that God is calling me to give myself singularly to His Word and its life-changing impact though the ministry of preaching and teaching.” He plans to pursue this calling while continuing to serve in a local church along with writing and speaking at conferences. CHRISTIAN PAKISTANI MAN DIES WHILE IN POLICE CUSTODY Nasir Masih, a 26-year-old Christian Pakistani man, died while in police custody Thursday, Aug. 19, after being arrested on false theft charges. His father, Mukhtar Masih, said some young Muslims took Nasir from his home in Baldia, Shiekhupura, pretending to be friendly. Within hours, police informed the family that charges of theft had been brought against him by the Muslim men. While holding him at the police station, police allegedly tortured Nasir who was transferred to the local hospital where he died. As a result of this death, hundreds of local Christians demonstrated in front of the local municipal office. Police used batons and fired shots into the air to break up the demonstration. Seventeen people were arrested, including two pastors. The pastors and two others were later released, but 10 remain in custody on charges of rioting and obstructing traffic. A case has been registered against 10 people, including six police officers, for the murder of Nasir, but at last report there were no arrests. The Centre for Legal Aid, Assistance and Settlement estimates that more than 1,500 Christians are in prison on false charges in the country’s Punjab province alone. (Voice of the Martyrs)

3 JAILED ERITREAN PASTORS MOVED TO UNDISCLOSED LOCATION Relatives of three Eritrean pastors jailed since May discovered Tuesday that three prominent evangelical leaders have been transferred from their police station cells in the capital of Asmara to an unknown location. When families and friends of Rev. Haile Naizgi and Dr. Kiflu Gebremeske of the Full Gospel Church and pastor Tesfatsion Hagos of the Rema Evangelical Church took food yesterday morning to the respective police stations where the men have been imprisoned without charges, authorities informed them that the men were no longer there. Evangelicals who later visited the wives of Naizgi and Gebremeske said they found them “in distress and deep sadness over the sudden disappearance of their husbands.” More than 400 members of evangelical churches in Eritrea are known to be imprisoned for their faith, including more than 70 soldiers held under severe conditions for more than two years at the Assab Military Prison. NIGERIAN POLICE CUT SHORT CRUSADE TO STOP VIOLENT PROTESTS In an attempt to stop violence from overflowing in Ilorin, the capital of Nigeria’s Kwara state, police moved in and cut short an evangelistic crusade after the first two days. The event, led by German evangelist Reinhard Bonnke, was to run Aug. 18-22. However, a crowd of militant Muslim youths rioted in the streets, vowing to stop the meetings. Despite condemnation of the riots from Kwara’s top Muslim imam, the protests continued until police forced an end of the crusade on Friday, Aug. 20. Christian leaders in Nigeria are accusing the government of pandering to these militant youths. (Voice of the Martyrs)

* HCJB World Radio, together with partners In Touch Ministries, SIM and the Evangelical Church of West Africa, began airing weekly half-hour programs to Nigeria in the Igbo language in 2000. CHRISTIAN RELIEF AGENCY SENDS AID TO QUAKE VICTIMS IN CHINA World Vision’s relief team arrived in southern China’s Yunnan province Sunday, Aug. 15, to assess the damage and provide survival kits to victims of a devastating earthquake that hit Zhaotong City and area five days earlier. The 5.6-magnitude quake left at least four people dead, more than 500 injured and 125,000 homeless. The hardest hit region, Ludian county, is also one of China’s poorest areas. Team members visited a local hospital in the county and found as many as 171 patients being treated in the corridors. Others were receiving medical care in temporary shelters. The earthquake destroyed more than 6,000 homes. Many people have found shelter in tents distributed by the local government. World Vision plans to deliver 2,000 quilts to the victims and build 150 large shelters for local schools to serve as temporary classrooms. This was the third major earthquake to hit Ludian county within a year. Two quakes, measuring 5.1 and 5.0 on the Richter scale, struck on Nov. 15 and Nov. 26, 2003. (World Vision eNews)

BOTTLED WATER OUTREACH SEES SUCCESS AT OLYMPIC GAMES IN GREECE Extreme heat at the Olympic Games in Greece is providing wonderful opportunities for ministry, says Fotis Romeos of AMG International. The mission is partnering with other agencies and local believers for “FLAME 2004.” As part of the outreach, team members are operating five “cool zones,” Romeos explains. “We are distributing free cold water bottles with a smile and a Christian testimony to the visitors of the Olympics. We will be distributing more than 100,000 bottles of cold water, trying to reach out to people and welcome them to Athens and share the gospel with them.” Tracts are attached to the bottles, and many people have expressed interest in these resources. Romeos is also excited about another outreach called “Operation Gideon” in which 300 people will visit 40 Greek islands. “After three days of fasting and praying, they’re distributing New Testaments and other Christian literature to different homes across Greece,” Romeos says. “They aim to visit 150,000 homes.” He adds that local believers seem to be more sensitive and more willing to share their faith because of the Olympics. Already there are stories of dozens of people coming to Christ. (Mission Network News)
