Today’s News Stories:
BELIEVERS READY TONS OF RELIEF SUPPLIES FOR STORM-RAVAGED FLORIDA After touring the devastation in Florida, U.S. President George W. Bush rolled up his sleeves and helped hand out emergency supplies to long lines of waiting residents. Before the day was done, he also delivered $2 billion via an emergency aid bill to help with disaster relief. International Aid’s Myles Fish says his organization has joined a growing number of faith-based humanitarian aid groups working to meet needs in the worst-hit areas. “We were able to get in there right after Hurricane Charley, and we have trucks that are being loaded right now to get down there.” International Aid’s response includes mobilizing volunteers to do clean-up and reconstruction projects. Fish says it’s also an opportunity to demonstrate Christ’s love to those in need. “The first strategy is that we are always partnering with local churches, and it’s our intent to use whatever support we have, be it volunteers or supplies in an effort to support that local church in their effort to reach their community.” International Aid has been joined by workers from many ministries such as Operation Blessing, the Southern Baptist International Mission Board, Campus Crusade for Christ, Luis Palau Evangelistic Association, Jesus Film Project and Wycliffe Associates. VIETNAMESE PASTOR RELEASED 8 DAYS AFTER BEING ARRESTED, QUESTIONED Eight days after being arrested, Vietnamese pastor Rev. Tran Mai was allowed to return to his home but ordered to appear at the Ministry of Public Security for questioning the next morning. Mai, leader of the Inter-Evangelistic Movement, a house church organization in Vietnam, was arrested at the border as he returned to the country on Sunday, Aug. 29. He was allowed a make a telephone call to his wife, but she was not told where he was or what charges he faced. While in custody, Mai was questioned about his activities abroad, his involvement in literature distribution during the South East Asian Games in Ho Chi Minh City in December 2003, and his connection with Rev. Bui Van Ba and Rev. Nguyen Hong Quang. Mai is an active participant in the Vietnam Evangelical Fellowship which had called for three days of prayer and fasting for the Church in Vietnam earlier this month. It was during this time that Mai was released. There is no indication if he will face charges. The next three days of prayer and fasting for the church in Vietnam are set for Oct. 3-5. ATTACKERS RAID, DESTROY 40-YEAR-OLD CHURCH BUILDING IN NEPAL A church building in western Nepal was destroyed on Friday, Sept. 3, and villagers have been warned to not meet again, said local sources. All of the contents of the building were either burned or stolen, including musical instruments, books and carpets. Believers had been meeting in the facility for almost 40 years, and there was an understanding that they could continue to meet freely. The attack happened at a time when the fellowship was growing rapidly. While no one was hurt, local Christians are shaken, and the future of the church is uncertain. Christian leaders will meet with those responsible for the attack in an effort to reach an agreement. Tensions have been rising in Nepal following the recent execution of 12 Nepalese citizens by Islamic militants in Iraq. Mosques have been attacked in the country in retaliation for the deaths, but Christians also have faced threats as the “Christian” West is seen as ultimately responsible for events leading up to this situation. ‘FANATICS’ WORK TO PIT MUSLIMS AGAINST CHRISTIANS IN CAMEROON Foreign Islamists have reportedly infiltrated Cameroon’s northern in an attempt to incite Muslims against Christians. The World Evangelical Alliance Religious Liberty Commission reported that Garga Aoudou, a community activist with a Dutch development organization, told Inter Press Service (IPS) last month that Garoua, the capital of the African nation’s North province, has been inundated with fliers inciting Muslims towards a hatred of Christians. “Religious fanatics exhort Muslims to increase the number of marriages between young Muslim men and Christian girls in order to convert them to Islam, to refuse to rent houses or sell land to Christians or to get them to move by raising the rent,” Aoudou said. Yves Steven, bishop of the town of Makolo, told IPS: “Several Christian families have come to me to complain. They were subjected to physical violence. Some of them were forcibly evicted from their homes with bats and at knifepoint before they could collect their property.” Lele Lafrique, the chief of police in the North province, fears the situation may get worse. “We’re calling upon . . . all Cameroonians not to fall prey to those seeking to create the chaos we’ve so often witnessed in neighboring countries,” he said. ‘MARATHON’ PROGRAM AIMS TO PUT BIBLE IN EVERY HOME OF CUBA Thousands of children are making commitments to Christ through Book of Hope’s “Marathon” program that aims to put a copy of the Scriptures in each home of Cuba. “The response has just been tremendous,” said Book of Hope’s Rob Hoskins. “It’s been more than anything we could expect. For instance in one city we distributed [Bibles to] 6,000 children and youth,” he said. “On the follow-up visit 2,000 of them made commitments to Christ — more than 30 percent. The testimonies of these kids coming to the Lord are miraculous.” The great economic needs in Cuba are driving people to look for hope, and it’s impacting the local church, Hoskins said. “The church growth in Cuba is fastest in all of Latin America, and so we see that by continuing to send God’s Word . . . we’re going to continue to fuel those flames of revival that are going on in Cuba today.” (Mission Network News)
* HCJB World Radio continues to air Spanish programs to Cuba via shortwave from South America. Hundreds of listeners have enrolled in the ministry’s Bible Institute of the Air, a Spanish correspondence program incorporating radio broadcasts. In addition, numerous pastors’ workshops sponsored by Apoyo, a joint training ministry with Leadership Resources International, have been held in Cuba since the mid-1990s.
CHRISTIANS SEE BREAKTHROUGHS AMONG AFRICA’S SATANIC STRONGHOLDS Animistic and spiritist religions are rampant in much of Africa, sometimes demanding human sacrifices as witchdoctors keep entire communities in fearful submission. Christians are often accused of “angering the gods” and chased from their homes or sentenced to death for “offending” a deity. The Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin reported that earlier this month that Nigerian police raided at least 11 shrines and were shocked by what they found: 30 skulls, 50 decaying human corpses and five fresh dead bodies. In another part of Nigeria, a Christian woman and her family had to run away from patrons of an animist shrine. They claimed that their “god” had chosen this woman to be its priestess. When she refused because of her Christian beliefs, followers of the idol sentenced her and her family to death. Despite such incidents, native missionaries persevere in spreading the gospel among animist tribes, and they are seeing “great breakthroughs” in their evangelistic outreach to spiritist communities. One ministry in Benin, a country known worldwide as the “cradle of voodoo,” reported that 300 animist chiefs and witches have given their lives to Christ in recent months.
