A Cynical Comment About ‘anointed’ Preaching

A netfriend commented:

I’ve been present several times when people are preaching with those horrible little “Praise Jesus!”, “Bless the Lord!” and “Amen” comments tucked in at the rate of two per sentence. One such preacher was talking about the victory of Satan over Christians and managed to tuck an “Amen” and a “Praise the Lord!” into very inappropriate places. I wondered if these people have ever had to listen to themselves preach?

My church records all my sermons and I listen to them periodically with the board when we do evaluations of my sermons. I frequently cringe. It’s a very good discipline.

I responded:

There’s a fairly simple reason for this habit

If you’re ‘anointed’ as a preacher you’ve got to prove it by talking loud and fast (thoughtful or exegetically-sound content is less important)…

Now if you’re going to talk loud and fast you’ve got to think of the next thing to say, and a few mantra-words to fill the void helps this process… 🙂

Shalom!
