Scientist: Human Cloning Will Frustrate Expectations Professor Jaenisch: Clone Babies Have a Short Life Expectancy

Cologne, December 17 (idea) – Human cloning will not live up to expectations according to one of the most successful genetic scientists. Professor Rudolf Jaenisch who teaches in Cambridge (USA) is highly skeptical of the Italian embryologist Severino Antinori. He has announced that the first baby produced by human cloning will be born soon.

Jaenisch told the German medical journal Deutsches Aerzteblatt in Cologne that clones are always genetically abnormal. They usually suffered an early death. Experiments with mice had shown that their life span was reduced by about a third due to serious liver and lung defects.

Jaenisch’s advice is not to trust photos of smiling babies who have allegedly been produced by reproductive cloning. Their identity would never be revealed in order to protect their personality. Consequently there could never be any real proof.

Jaenisch has serious reservations about the whole process of human coning. The demand could only come from couples who cannot have children by any other means – for example when test tube fertilization is impossible because the man produces no sperm.

Infertility will, however, also be reproduced in the baby so that these children in turn could only reproduce by cloning. Jaenisch: “I find that unacceptable.”

Human cloning is banned in Europe, and formal legislation is going through the United States Congress.
