BELIEVERS IN INDIA MURDERED, MORE CHRISTIANS THREATENED Gospel for Asia reports that a family of six who are members of a Believers Church near Nagpur in Central India were recently violently killed. Their pastor was warned to stay away under threats that he would also be killed. The attack came while the pastor was attending an out-of-town pastors’ conference. According to reports, two men wielding an axe invaded the family’s home at 1:30 in the morning then murdered the entire family. Police later arrested two suspects. Dead are the man and his wife, their 17-year-old daughter, two sons, ages 13 and 11, and another family member. When the pastor returned from the conference, he learned that an anonymous person had warned him not to go back to the village where the church was located or he would also be murdered. Information about a motive for the slayings is not yet available. (Mission Network News)

BROADCASTING FROM A FORMER DEATH CAMP The antenna for a radio station in Germany is positioned atop a chemical plant where poison gas was once manufactured to kill millions of Jews. Worldwide, Auschwitz has become a symbol of terror, genocide – and the Holocaust. Henryk Krol, head of the Radio CCM network, said in an interview during the recent UCB International Conference in Yarnfield, Staffordshire, UK, “Our first transmitter of Radio CCM started its operation in 1998 and our antennas are not in the camp, but on the chimney of the factory where Zyklon-B, was manufactured and used by Nazis in the death camp. So now, out of that chimney, the signal is spilling out with the Good News for people of this city where there was so much suffering.” Krol, who along with his family were deeply in involved in Billy Graham’s historic visit to Poland in the 1970s, said that another of his radio stations is based in Gliwice and the radio antenna is placed on a historical timber radio tower, the exact place where the so-called Gliwice German provocation triggered the beginning of World War II. “There are many symbolic things with our radio ministry, but of course it’s not easy. We are constantly struggling with many, many problems and challenges. We hope and dream and pray for expanding our network to bring it into a position of simply balancing our expenses with the income. We are working also on the commercial side of the radio. The challenge is great, but we know that the Lord is even bigger, and if He wants us to do it, we’ll be able to grow this network to have a significant influence on the Polish society.” (Assist News)

COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL HELPING TSUNAMI SURVIVORS LONG-TERM For thousands across southern Asia, the day after Christmas, December 26, 2004, brought terror, devastation and death as the most powerful tsunami in 40 years crashed in around them. Half a year after the giant waves killed 178,000 people in 11 countries and left another 50,000 missing, Asian nations on Sunday held ceremonies to mourn those lost, while survivors struggled to pick up the pieces. A number of Christian organizations such as Compassion International are working along side these survivors to rebuild the ravaged landscape. “Thankfully,” says Compassion president Wess Stafford, “God really protected Compassion and the children of Compassion during the tsunami. Of the 150,000 or so children we sponsor across Asia, only one child was swept away.” Stafford explained in a recent interview that Compassion’s Asia area director is Indonesian and was able very quickly to marshal a response effort. Compassion International is using the funds raised in a variety of ways, says Stafford. They have delivered food, but also have helped people with cooking supplies, provided stoves, medical care and truckloads of water. By December 2005, Compassion will have built 200 homes for the residents of Lampuyang, Lhoh and several other communities. In partnership with the National Christian Evangelical Alliance in Sri Lanka, Compassion has distributed 29,507 school packs; 18,955 food and survival packs, and 1,932 temporary shelters. To help restore a means of livelihood, men and women in Sri Lanka are being trained on the job to rebuild boats and homes. At the end of May, 40 boats were built through this program. Supplies for livelihood regeneration also include fishing equipment, sewing machines, brick making machines and utensils for carpentry. (Religion Today)

SURVEY SHOWS RISING SUPPORT FOR TEN COMMANDMENTS DISPLAYS A day after the Supreme Court ruled on a pair of cases concerning Ten Commandments displays on public property, a survey by the First Amendment Center shows 70% of Americans approve such postings. The survey released yesterday also reveals that 85% would approve if the Commandments are included as “one document among many historical documents” when displayed in public buildings. The First Amendment protects freedom of religion, speech and the press and Americans’ right to assemble and petition the government. The survey, which poses several questions about the First Amendment, is conducted annually by the Nashville-based center, which collaborated with American Journalism Review magazine. One thousand respondents were surveyed by telephone between May 13 and May 23. Another key finding of the survey is that 63% oppose adopting a constitutional amendment to give Congress the power to punish flag desecration as a form of protest – up from 53% in 2004. (WWRN)
