Understanding Islam: another response

Understanding Islam

I wrote to Ninure:

As you know I don’t always post stuff I 100% agree with – I do it for clarity and perspective – and this topic needs your perspective

Can I add your comments to our website?

Her response:

Hiya Rowland,

Of course you can put my response on your website.

I don’t know if or how much you listen to the radio, but I have been listening to the radio and hearing plenty of Islamic/Muslim organizations and clerics condemning terrorism and/or violence.

Of course I am listening to the “liberal” National Public Radio…and the mainstream media seems to see no “profit” in dispelling some myths.

However the main problem is that there is no equivalent voice to someone like Bonhoeffer. See: http://www.unc.edu/~kurzman/whospeaks.htm

In my sharing with you when we were together in April, I didn’t get a chance to tell you of my spiritual journey…or how I was a Muslim for a short period of time. And I can tell you that your average Muslim who knows anything of the Koran is a “person of peace” everybit as much as your average Christian.

With much love and respect, I remain your good friend but ask that while you justly condemn the actions and philosophy of ‘extremists” of Islam, that you not seem to echo the bigotry of the fearful and/or religious right of our respective countries.
