My Pastoral Studies lecturer ( a wise and experienced pastor/academic/ chaplain) explained that pastors are not paid for what they do but they are paid so that they are free to do what they do, without having to worry about income.
Trouble is that when most congregations talk about the pastor being ‘free’ they don’t mean ‘available’.
