I think God is basically an utilitarian. That is, his commands are given to us because they give us guidance in the practicality of living a loving life – having the character of Jesus. Thus while the utility of commands not to murder, steal or commit adultery are self-evident, it makes no sense whatever to me to believe that God desires humans who have been made with a desire for intimacy with the same gender to live a life of enforced celibacy rather than enjoying the gifts of love, sex, intimacy, fidelity and companionship which are available to heterosexuals. To put it another way – who does it hurt? And if it hurts no-one why would God demand a path which creates less rather than more love in the world?

If it comes to the judgement and I am found to have discerned wrongly on this topic, I would far rather stand before God guilty of allowing a small number of people who felt called by God to ministry to exercise that ministry despite some sin in their life, than I would care to stand before him guilty of wrongfully condemning a whole segment of humanity as sinners and standing in the way of God’s calling to them.
