Proverbs 1:20-23
Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: [21] She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, [22] How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? [23] Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
Today’s Quote: God is speaking. Are you listening?
When Mt. St Helens erupted, it emitted a loud, thunderous boom. Students at Western Washington University heard the blast 200 miles away. People in their homes as far as 600 miles away could hear the explosion. 57 people were killed by the volcano, but from the survivors who were rescued came an amazing report. Though they were right next to Mt. St. Helens, they didn’t hear the blast. How could this be? Scientists say they were in a “zone of silence.” Incredibly, the upward thrust of the exploding mountain also sent the sound of the event upward into the atmosphere where it bounced to earth several times, but in intervals outward and away from the exact location.
People can often be caught in their own “zone of silence.” God is working all around them, trying to get their attention, yet they cannot hear Him. It’s like God is shouting, yet they cannot pick up the sound of His voice. Distractions like work, relationships, and hobbies create a “zone of silence.” Jesus spoke of this in Matthew. He said, “Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.” (Matthew 13:13) Then, when tragedy strikes, they vainly say, “Where is God?” He’s been present all the time, they just haven’t been listening.
Don’t let the cares of this world create a “zone of silence” in your life. Have your ears tuned to the voice of God. Listen for His call.
