Heresy by Association

From a pastor-friend:

Dear Rowland As always, your snippets are so refreshing. I so agree with the quote: “If it is true, it is of the Holy Spirit”.’ It is something of a reminder of the stance Gamaliel took, huh?

(See 50 Spiritual Classics – http://victoriaconcordiacrescit.blogspot.com/ )

It also brought to mind the criticism I endured on two separate occasions (there were many more, but these two spring to mind!):

– One was a protest march in New Zealand, I think it was. I don’t even recall the issue now, but it was one I was passionate about. But the fact that there were homosexuals also participating made me guilty by association in the minds of some friends.

– the other was in the UK when I had been asked to be the evangelist for a community-wide week in a town to the north of London. As plans developed, the Catholics came on board. I did feel I had to clear with them what I believed was the end goal of evangelism, and they seemed happy with that. But then they invited Cardinal Basil Hume to address the youth night during the week. He was brilliant. He had the young people eating out of his hands metaphorically. His message was as evangelistic as any that Billy Graham could have mustered. But was I in the gun from some in the [conservative Christian] constituency who thought I was letting the flag down? Only some, but vociferous ones, as always. So thanks for these quotes. And every blessing on your continuing ministry. In fellowship, [Name withheld]
