Dress for Church

Platform Dress.

I have a lady here at [our Baptist Church] who is in the process of writing up guidelines for those who go on the platform.

She is keen to include something on dress. <>

Responses:

At [our Baptist church] we have the following:

Short skirts are out

Excessive make up is a no no

High heel shoes are dangerous and portray the wrong image

Tight fitting blouses are too suggestive

Bright finger nail polish is out of character

Now, that covers the male pastors, for females we suggest… 🙂

Another Baptist church:

WE do have some guidelines that our music team set down. They are fairly general but help in dealing with any issues that arise. I do not have a copy of them but they include things like, no cleavage or bounce factor, no tight pants that show off crotch, no singlet tops (tops must have sleeves), shoes not thongs (although in the evening this is more relaxed), no board shorts, ect…. As we have people aged 13-50 on the platform we cannot always except them all to show maturity in decision making on these issues.

My contribution:

Is she including the pastor?

Jan and I were at East Doncaster Baptist Church last Sunday: first time for several years in Australia or NZ I’ve noticed that a Baptist pastor (Chris Page) preached wearing a suit and tie. But in that congregation (my guess is that only one or two were under 50 years of age) it was appropriate (though I preached there a couple of months ago dressed casually)

I note on the Foxtel ACC channel that the two megachurch pastors in Sydney – the Hills and Christian City – preach dressed casually (presumably ‘cos their congregations are predominantly Gen-Xers…)

Horses for courses

At Blackburn Baptist we used to err on the side of dressing not to *seriously* alienate the p;ermission-withholders (I agree generally with the suggestions about women’s dress in the other postings), but more importantly to connect with folks on their way into the church/kingdom (yes, of course they’re not the same 🙂

I remember preaching on this once and asked what we’d do with John the Baptist if he turned up to our more traditional service (11 am)… Would we rush him over to the manse to have him washed and respectable… ???
