The last four months has brought to light one of the hidden foibles of digital technology. Sony introduced “Digital Rights Management” to a number of CDs which installed root kit software on the user’s computer which protected it from being copied, as well as allowing it to track usage of the CD, but which also created a back door for other scams, viruses and trojans. What caused the furore was Sony’s willingness to do this without telling anyone. In case you have received something about this via email and thought it was a scam, the news is that Sony has just settled a class action filed in New York. Details are available at http://news.com.com/Sony+settles+rootkit+class+action+lawsuit/2100-1002_3-6012173.html. There are a number of links at the bottom of the article if you want to follow it further. Sony is offering to replace the CDs with three others, if you have one that carries the DRM software.
