Points of interest in that thread are:

28 countries in Africa practice this tribal custom.

It predates Christianity and goes back to the Pharoahs.

The stats for Egypt are grossly exagerated and out of date, currently it appears to be 30 % in cities and 60 % in rural south. .

The practice in Egypt is far less (physically that is) than that of Somalia.

The head of the Coptic Orthodox Church HH Pope Shenouda III has spoken out publically against this practice and attended anti-FGM Seminars in Cairo.

It is not even a Muslim practice, however Muslim African countries seem to enforce the practice.

In over ten years in the Church in Australia I have never heard of the practice being imported here amongst any Church people, however I am aware of a certain other religion where it has. It is an interesting side note that Egyptian Medical Doctors are trained in the practice when they undertake their medical studies in Egypt (I presume this is accurate although I have never clarified it with a Doctor-I was told by a non-medico).
