100 YEARS OF PENTECOSTAL REVIVAL OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Azuza Street, Los Angeles April 9th 1906 A century ago the Holy Spirit touched-down in Los Angeles in an amazing outpouring that sparked revivals in many other U.S. cities – even around the world. A movement that continues to impact the Church today.
God used a humble black preacher from Texas called William Seymour.
The 1906 revival that came to be known simply as “Azusa Street” did much more than just renew the “Pentecostal movement” – it was a rebirth of hunger-for-the-Lord that continues to be expressed in congregations across denominational lines. It was a time of unity in prayer, worship and fellowship that is an example for us today, of the fact that, in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, male nor female, black nor white; but just fellow Believers in the Lord.
This Pentecostal movement spread to Melbourne in 1909 at the Good News Hall in Queensbury St, North Melbourne. The In 1916 C.L. Greenwood began home meetings in Sunshine and in 1925 he opened the Sunshine Gospel Hall. A year later he moved to a converted theatre in Richmond. The work flourished, other Pentecostal assemblies sought affiliation and, with Greenwood as pastor, the Richmond Temple became the mother church of a network of Pentecostal churches.
