It seems that collisions with rocks from space have been very determinative for life on Earth. The latest find, a 300 mile wide meteor impact crater in Antarctica from some 250 million years ago, is believed to be connected with the extinction of most animal life on Earth, paved the way for the dinosaurs, (a later meteor helped eradicate them), and given the formation of the Australian continent a little boost.
