Homosexuality And Aetiology

A netfriend wrote (October 2003):

I believe at least some homosexual activity RESULTS from a personality problem, and is always a sinful response. My argument is not cyclic. ‘Homosexuality’ (as a mode of creation) was not the cause of the behaviour, but rather an inappropriate response to life’s early challenges.

I responded:

And yet, and yet… What are we to make of a few (admittedly not many) homosexual clients of mine whose same-sex siblings were happily heterosexual, and who could not point to an aetiology in terms of Elizabeth Moberly’s thesis re an inability to bond with the same-sex parent? However, all that said, I conducted the wedding of one of them, and after several years he’s still happily married (heterosexually), though he admits he ‘can never live as if he never had’ a homosexual lifestyle…
