Hot sermon draws cool response

PREMIER Steve Bracks has ridiculed comments by a radical Islamic cleric that blamed global warming on Australians’ lack of faith in God.
Sheik Mohammed Omran told followers at his Melbourne mosque that out-of-control secular scientific values had caused environmental disaster.
“The fear of Allah is not there. So we now have a polluted earth, a polluted water, a wasteland,” he said.
“What are the people now crying for? The prophet told you hundreds of years ago, ‘Look after the water’.”
Mr Bracks yesterday gave short shrift to the sermon.
“While we have free speech in Australia, people will have the good sense to reject those things which bear no relationship to the truth,” he said.
“Sensible people will recoil from that and say it’s just wrong.”
His reaction came as the NSW Government stopped short of criticising Christian Democrat leader Fred Nile for calling for a halt to Muslim immigration.

The comments follow reports a London sheik, Abdul Raheem Green, is exhorting Muslims in Australia to take control of the country by having more children, out-breeding non-believers.
“We’ve got a bit of an opportunity here. They’re not having babies any more. So what if, instead, we have the babies?” Sheik Green says in a DVD.

While it’s desirable that immigrants learn Dutch and have some knowledge of the constitution, alienating the peaceful and moderate Muslim majority by a generalized attack on Islam bodes no good for the future of a country that by 2050 will be composed of a majority of former immigrants. Calvinists or not, free speech ought to be tempered by the good sense of avoiding gratuitous offense.
