Herald Sun news report 3/7/07. Carly Crawford reporting:
UNIVERSITY students will be the key targets of a weekend recruitment drive by Muslim extremists espousing the teachings of Osama bin Laden. Firebrand Melbourne cleric Sheik Mohammed Omran will join other hardline clerics at a conference in Sydney devoted to bin Laden’s poisonous brand of Islam, Wahhabism. Terrorist recruitment tactics have been in the spotlight since eight young professionals were arrested over the latest wave of UK bombings. Video tapes later emerged showing how jihadists sought to recruit young doctors, lawyers and educated professionals. Flyers for the event, the Islam Mercy to the Worlds Conference, have been dropped in cafes and restaurants around Sydney’s southwest. Among the speakers will be Sheik Kamal Taleb, who has returned to Australia after 15 years in a Saudi Arabian seminary devoted to fundamentalism. It was the same seminary where exiled cleric Sheik Feiz Mohammed developed his hardline views. Insiders say Sheik Taleb, who also uses the name Abu Marian Taleb, has returned to fill the void left by Sheik Mohammed, who has fled to Lebanon after outcry over his hate DVDs in which he called Jews pigs and urged children to become martyrs. Sheik Taleb, who was born in Australia, is on a recruiting drive in mosques and Islamic centres across Sydney. Fundamentalist preacher Abdul Salam Zoud, who presided over the wedding of French terror conspirator Willie Brigitte, is also listed to speak at the event, arranged by Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah Association Australia. It takes place in Belmore over three days from Friday. Sources say the teachings at the public event are vetted of inflammatory material, and aim to attract smaller groups to more exclusive gatherings. Conference organisers did not return the Herald Sun’s calls last night.
