A Suppurating ulcer on the body of the church

The Religion Report – A suppurating ulcer on the body of the church

Wednesday 29 August, 8.30 am and 8.05 pm, and Thursday 30 August, 1.30 am

Presented by Stephen Crittenden

Sydney’s retired auxiliary bishop Geoffrey Robinson – a man much esteemed by Australian Catholics for the integrity with which he took on the terrible task of working out a national response to the clerical sexual abuse crisis – has a new book making national and international headlines, and provoking a vitriolic response on conservative websites in Australia and the United States. Criticising the church for ‘managing’ rather than confronting the deep causes of the crisis, he blames the papacy for its silence and calls for major reform – a constitutional papacy, a rethink of all the church’s teachings on sex and marriage, even a few phrases of the Nicene Creed may have to be altered. abc.net.au/rn/religionreport <http://www.abc.net.au/rn/religionreport> (MP3 download available)
