One-legged chickens were so inept at running away they were all caught and eaten. The species is extinct.
Which reminds me of a short story, by Australia’s Walter Murdoch, called “One-Leg Island”.
A tourist called at an island and found that every inhabitant was missing the left leg below the knee. He asked why this was so, and was told that it was customary for all teenagers to have an amputation when reaching age of 13. No one knew why, but it was tradition. The tourist, however, from what he read, and his own speculation, surmised the origin of the custom.
It seems the island was settled by survivors of a ship which had sunk, and who had been adrift in an open boat with no food or water. It was decided to resort to cannibalism, and progressively each person sacrificed the lower left leg. By the time land was sighted they had all suffered thus.
Why continue the custom when no longer necessary? Because their offspring tended to be uppity about having a full set of legs, and this proved intolerable. Posing around, thinking they were superior to their Elders and Betters !
