A Suggested Pastor

Another worthwhile angle when looking for some history books that belong on the list is to look for the ones where history overlaps with another discipline. So, to link to my pet discipline, I reckon that “A Brief History of Christian Worship” by James F White would be a worthy addition to the list. It is a lively read, well researched and well organised, and only 180 pages.

To go a bit deeper into the same field, Frank Senn’s book, “The People’s Work: A Social History of the Liturgy” (330 pages) is also great, trying to get past the clergy/hierarchy’s take on worship and look at the way the ordinary people experienced and/or reshaped various bits of the Church’s worship practices across the centuries.

Peace and hope,

Nathan Nettleton
