Elvis Impersonation

This incident happened 40 years ago…

Our school PTA ladies were seeking a fundraiser for the school, and settled on a talent show. Every mother is sure her child is the most talented kid in town, seems to me. There were auditions, and all the usual, and there was one kid with some kind of learning disability speech impediment?? (I forget now what it was) that some of the PTA mothers wanted to eliminate before the auditions. HIs act was to imitate Elvis and mouth a song to a recording, while holding a guitar. Finally, it was decided to give the kid a chance, even if he was not ready for prime time.

He went through all the motions, rehearsals, etc. that the other kids did.

Night of the performance, his mother had somehow gotten him into an Elvis jumpsuit type costume, and he went on to the tune of “I’m All Shook Up” Then he did an Elvis type of dance step . The audience went wild, and he was a hit, as Elvis popularity was big with the kids at that time. I was gratified when I heard the audience roar as he said I’m All Shook Up. Perfect choice. The judges didn’t award first prize to him, but everyone was pleased, and the other kids looked at him with different eyes after that.
