Preaching To Jewish Followers Of Jesus Today

These tips were suggested for a shabbat service where I’m preaching in a few weeks.
It’s the church in Melbourne for Jews-who-follow-Jesus.

Rowland.

Friday’s sermon…

 Sermon length: 20-30 min

A brief list of `PC’ language in Messianic Jewish Congregations:

avoid -> use instead

Christian (adj) -> Messianic

Christian (n) -> believer, follower, messianic Jew

Christ/Saviour -> Messiah

Christianity -> Messianic belief

Church -> Messianic community, shul/synagogue

Old Testament -> Tanach (`Tan-nark’) / Old Covenant

New Testament -> New Covenant

church service -> shabbat (sabbath) service

conversion -> anything else! (eg. `completed’ Jew instead of `converted’ Jew)

baptism -> mikveh

Apostle Paul (of Tarsus) -> Rabbi Sh’aul (of Tarsus)

Other terminology:

Jesus/Yeshua OK

God OK (Yahweh/Jehovah not normally used)

greeting – Shabbat shalom (sabbath peace)
