Spain now has 500 Gypsy churches with some 2,000 pastors and 90,000 baptized believers. In the UK about 25,000 of the 300,000 Gypsy population are believers. France has 130,000 Gypsies in 210 churches planted by the Light & Light branch of the Assemblies of God; they have also trained over 1,300 pastors and sent out missionaries to 40 countries, starting Bible schools in three. Altogether there are between one-half and one million evangelical Gypsies in Europe, out of a population between 11-38 million. “Traditionally we have been many, but divided, and now God is uniting us as a people with the common goal of serving Him,” said May Bitel, a Swiss Gypsy who is an accredited Council of Europe expert on Gypsy issues. Hungary will soon have its first complete Bible in a Gypsy dialect-Lovari–in an attempt to reach some its 400,000 Gypsy population. [CHARISMA/CHRISTIANITY & RENEWAL 4/02, HCJB 19 Mar.’02]
