The Roman Catholic Church gradually changed its position from Creationisn to Theistic Evolution from the 1870’s to the 1990’s.

And the conservative Christian churches, in general, supported evolution from the 1870s until Henry M Morris read a Seventh-day Adventist book, and then wrote (in conjunction with John Whitcomb)

“The Genesis Flood”, published in 1961.

Before then the only Christian group of any size which supported the idea that the universe is only a few thousand years old was the SDA.
