If you are one of those believers with a fascination for science and how God put the universe together, but at the same time you are sick of the constant bickering between Christians and atheists, this website provides welcome relief.
The BioLogos Foundation has been set up by Francis Collins, former Director of the Human Genome project and author of the bestselling The Language of God. Collins is of the conviction that, far from needing to be at war with each other, science and faith actually cooperate with each other to reveal a universe and world of wonder and beauty that was made by the Creator God over many millions of years. Their Mission Statement simply states that “We believe that faith and science both lead to truth about God and creation.”
This website is very well thought out and is designed mainly for believers, but would also be very helpful for people seeking the truth and struggling with the seeming dilemma of the contradictions between science and faith. To this end, Collins and his team have put forward detailed responses to most of the typical questions that arise when these issues are discussed and debated. Some of the questions raised are:
˜ What role could God have in evolution?
˜ How does the Fall fit into evolutionary history? Were Adam and Eve historical figures?
˜ What does the fossil record show?
˜ How are the ages of the earth and universe calculated? How accurate are those figures?
Many Christians are of the conviction that the ‘heavens and the earth’ were created in a literal period of 7 x 24 hour days. Many atheists on the other hand, believe that science has shown that belief in a Creator is simply outdated and childish and that those who still cling to belief in God have committed intellectual suicide. Collins believes in neither of these conclusions. He makes the logical point that, if God is outside of nature, then science can neither prove nor disprove God’s existence. To emphasise his point, he refers to well known evolutionary biologist, Stephen Jay Gould, who said, “science can work only with naturalistic explanations; it can neither affirm nor deny other types of actors (like God) in other spheres (the moral realm for example).” This website shows how creation is a pointer to the existence of God, and how science can show us its beautiful intricacies and complex elegance.
In this 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th of the publication of his On the Origin of Species, this website is a timely reminder that it is time a truce was declared between believers and non-believers over the origins of life, the universe and everything.
