‘The Aboriginal Problem: let the full-bloods die out’

Message from a friend on Facebook (30 September 2010):

It was not until 1967 that the Australian Govt changed the following policy: In Hansard is recorded – “Let the full bloods die out, breed the colour out of the rest and we’ll never know that we had an aboriginal problem…”
[ I can give you the quote & details exactly but I have to dig through my library… will do it later.]

Later:

Hi Rowland. If you can get hold of

“A DROP IN A BUCKET-The Mount Margaret Story’, you will find the original record of my quote on pages 212 -213. This explains some of the implications of the first Conference of Commonwealth & State Aboriginal Authorities which was held in Canberra 21-23 April 1937.

Of course there were no indigenous people at the conference.

In W.A. they were controlled by the “Protector” O.E. Neville… a quote from him on page 218: { He preferred non – marriage of part white girls as promoting his absorption policy} :
“Our policy is to send them [part white girls] out into the white community, and if a girl comes back pregnant our rule is to keep her for 2 years. The child is then taken away from the mother and sometimes never sees her again. Thus these children grow up as whites, knowing nothing of their own environment. At the expirationof two years the mother goes back into service so it really does not matter if she has half a dozen children.”
